Carybe

Carybé was an Argentine artist, illustrator, sculptor and muralist who became a naturalized Brazilian citizen, widely recognized for his deep connection with Afro-Brazilian culture and the daily life of Bahia. Born in Lanús, Argentina, in 1911, he moved to Brazil when he was still young, where he settled permanently in Salvador, a city that would have a profound influence on his work.

A multifaceted artist, Carybé worked with woodcuts, drawings, paintings, ceramics, sculptures and monumental murals. His work is marked by agile and expressive lines, vibrant colors and a sensitive representation of popular culture, Afro-Brazilian religions, festivals and traditions of the people of Bahia.

He was a friend of Jorge Amado and a collaborator of several writers, illustrating books and literary works. His talent led him to create important murals in places such as Miami International Airport, the Itamaraty palaces and several cultural institutions in Brazil and abroad.

Carybé became one of the most respected artists in Brazil, leaving a visual legacy that immortalizes fundamental aspects of Brazilian cultural identity. He died in Salvador, in 1997, in the same candomblé temple where he was an ogã.
