Carlos Bastos

He began his artistic training at the School of Fine Arts of the University of Bahia, where he entered in 1944. He was a student of João Mendonça Filho, Raymundo Aguiar and Alberto Valença. In the same year, he participated, with Mario Cravo Júnior and Genaro, in the 1st Exhibition of Modern Art of Bahia.

In 1946, he moved to Rio de Janeiro, where he completed his studies at the National School of Fine Arts. He also studied at the Brazilian Society of Fine Arts and at the Getúlio Vargas Foundation - FGV, having been a student of Santa Rosa, Iberê Camargo and Carlos Oswald. At the same time, he took private courses with Candido Portinari and scenography classes with Martim Gonçalves.

In 1947, he returned to Salvador and organized his first solo exhibition, at the Municipal Public Library. In the same year, he studied at the Arts Students League, in New York. In 1949, he moved to Paris, where he studied mural painting and fresco at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts and attended drawing classes at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. He returned to Brazil in 1951. In 1952, he participated in the 1st Modern Art Salon and, in 1954, in the Black and White Salon. After another period in Paris, between 1957 and 1958, he set up his studio at Solar da Jaqueira, in Salvador.

In 1965, he published the book of drawings Igrejas, Santos e Anjos da Bahia, with a preface by Jorge Amado. From then on, the artist illustrated several of Amado's books.
