Cholo
Mario Nieves Ampuero, known artistically as Cholo, was born in Peru in 1934 and settled in Brazil, where he became a prominent figure in Brazilian naïve art. His work is recognized for its sensitive and technical portrayal of Brazil’s historical and cultural heritage, especially historic cities such as Ouro Preto and Diamantina.
Self-taught, Cholo began his artistic career in Salvador, where he settled and began painting urban landscapes and architectural elements with a vibrant palette and precise strokes. His style combines the simplicity of folk art with refined technical execution, resulting in works that evoke Brazilian affective memory and cultural identity.
Throughout his career, Cholo has participated in several solo and group exhibitions in Brazil and abroad, including the United States, Canada and France. His art has been recognized by collectors and critics, consolidating him as one of the main representatives of naïve art on the international scene.
Cholo passed away in 2010, leaving an artistic legacy that continues to inspire and move lovers of Brazilian art.
